Mercer Rosenthal uses Magic xpi as a central integration platform to connect production, logistics, maintenance, energy management, SAP, Salesforce, and external partner systems. By replacing complex point-to-point interfaces, Mercer reduced maintenance effort, improved data quality, and created a scalable foundation for future digitalization initiatives.
Customer Profile
Mercer Rosenthal GmbH is a modern biorefinery and part of Mercer International Inc. At its Rosenthal site in Germany, the company produces approximately 360,000 tons of kraft pulp annually for paper and tissue production.
The company also produces bioproducts such as tall oil and lignin and operates Thuringia’s largest biomass power plant, enabling the site to cover its own energy needs while feeding green electricity into the public grid.
Challenge
Mercer’s IT and OT landscape had evolved over many years, resulting in numerous point-to-point interfaces between SAP and third-party systems.
These interfaces created high maintenance effort, required frequent adjustments during system updates, and made some operational data available only with delays. In addition, several production-related devices and partner systems had to be integrated without standard SAP connectors.
Mercer needed a centralized, scalable integration platform that could connect production, logistics, commercial systems, energy processes, and external partners without disrupting daily operations.
“Magic’s low-code approach enables us to implement integration requirements quickly. For us, Magic xpi runs as a ‘silent engine’ in the background – stable, reliable, and without requiring daily maintenance effort. At the same time, we can implement new requirements, such as legal compliance obligations, very quickly on the system side.”

Solution
Mercer selected the Magic xpi Integration Platform to consolidate its integration architecture.
Using Magic xpi, Mercer gradually replaced point-to-point connections between SAP and various subsystems, including production applications, logistics solutions, Salesforce, web services, and external partner systems.
Magic xpi’s low-code approach, standard connectors, graphical Data Mapper, and stable runtime environment enabled Mercer to standardize integrations while maintaining existing workflows.
Results
With Magic xpi, Mercer created a centralized and scalable integration foundation across multiple business and operational processes.
The company now benefits from:
- Reduced maintenance and customization effort
- Greater transparency across data flows
- Real-time availability of IT and OT data
- Improved SAP data quality
- Less manual intervention
- Faster implementation of new requirements
- A reliable foundation for future digitalization projects
Magic xpi is now also used at additional Mercer locations in Germany and Canada.
“For medium-sized and large industrial companies, Magic xpi is absolutely recommendable – powerful, pragmatic, and without unnecessary overhead. In addition, the collaboration takes place on equal footing with short decision-making paths.”

Key Use Cases
Real-Time Truck Handling
Around 200 trucks loaded with wood chips arrive at the Mercer plant every day. As trucks pass through measurement gates, load data is captured automatically and transferred to SAP in real time via Magic xpi.
This enables faster logistics processes, seamless material tracking, and greater supply chain transparency.
Roundwood Measurement Data
For each log, 20 to 30 quality-related parameters are recorded digitally. Supplier XML data from across Europe is automatically imported, harmonized, and transferred into SAP via Magic xpi.
This supports quality assessment, billing, and production planning while reducing manual work and errors.
Energy Management
Energy and operational data, including consumption values, temperatures, and steam data, are collected from various measurement points and transferred in real time to an external IoT and energy management partner.
This provides Mercer with greater transparency into energy flows and supports efficiency and sustainability initiatives.
SAP and Salesforce Synchronization
At one sister plant, maintenance data is exchanged between SAP and Salesforce using Magic xpi.
The bidirectional integration eliminated duplicate data entry and ensured consistent data records. A project originally planned for nine months was completed in only three months.
Looking Ahead
By centralizing its integration landscape with Magic xpi, Mercer Rosenthal has created a reliable foundation for ongoing industrial digitalization. What began as a way to reduce interface complexity and maintenance effort has become a scalable integration backbone that supports real-time visibility, process automation, and future innovation across plants, systems, and partners.
